7 pc SET MISTLETOE Sterling Silver French Nouveau Floral MURAT Cordial Cups Tray
As you can see from my store, I love Victorian European and American silver and holly / mistletoe items. This cordial set is probably one of my personal favorites in the store right now, it is absolutely lovely and not frequently found. Prettily detailed antique art nouveau tray with 6 cordial cups / shot glasses (please note the petite size as it is hard to tell from photos). Set is made by Charles Murat of Paris. NO MONOGRAMS on any of the pieces. 254 GRAMS of Solid sterling silver, this is a French set with applied raised mistletoe leaves and berries decorating each of the cups, and a reticulated tray with mistletoe cutouts around the edge with two handles. All with a very period-appropriate Art Nouveau style. The cups are solid / smooth on the inside, with the mistletoe branches applied with a 3D effect, they are not thinly pressed repousse pieces. Faint gold wash remains inside them. The tray has beautiful movement of mistletoe leaves intertwining around the edge. The base of the tray and exterior of the cups have a textured / matte finish which is nice to help mask surface wear. Would make a great gift for the Christmas lover in your life or for your use in setting a beautiful Christmas table, with silver being one of the colors of the season. I use my cordial set to hold cocktail picks or little candies or aperitifs. The tray could also be used to serve small bites, candies or bon bons, or as a large jewelry or vanity tray. I wish I could keep this beautiful set but it is not a need for me so hoping it will go to someone who will use and enjoy it. I thought about keeping the tray but it would be a shame to break up the set. Many many hallmarks on this set – I count 16. Each cup is marked twice, with the Minerve head hallmarks for French Sterling Silver items along with the maker’s mark for Charles Murat who started silversmithing in the late 1800s. The tray is marked twice with the Minerve head for sterling, along with the Murat maker’s mark and Depose. Each handle of the tray is marked with the boar’s head mark for French solid silver items. Depose” is a term used in Europe that means “Registered maker for the particular country of origin of the item. Weighs 254 grams of sterling silver. The tray is 8 inches by 5 inches and the handles curve up about an inch off the table. The cordial cups are teeny tiny, like shot glasses, meant to hold just a little sippy, They are about 1 5/8 inches tall and the rim is 1 1/4 inch in diameter. In estate condition considering age. Most notable imperfections are on the cups, they all have somewhat misshapen bases where pin dings and dents have occurred causing little ripples and curves here and there around the base rime. They do still stand squarely up right but a few may teeter slightly when wiggled, with the base not being perfectly flat. A few flea bites around the top edges of the cups. Some utensil nicks and scratches on the set, and a few of the cup rims while still round are not perfect. The tray has no pin dings or dents, it is still perfectly formed as it was made. Both the cups and the tray have a few stubborn tarnish spots and surface wear and scratches from use and polishing over the years. The cups exteriors and center of the tray have a textured matte finish which helps mask some of the scratching. Some scuffs on the undersides as well where they meet the table. I see no damage, scratching or nicks to the mistletoe designs on any of the cups or tray. But as with all my estate items – Please see photos closely as this is not a mint condition set and was clearly used and enjoyed in the past. I dearly love, collect, use and sell antique sterling silver flatware and household items so please check out my other listings including Tiffany & Co. Thanks for stopping by!
