Early Lenox Tea Set with ALVIN STERLING OVERLAY. Teapot, Creamer & Sugar Bowl. Art Nouveau Era- Green Mark. This is a gorgeous rare complete Early Lenox Tea Set, marked with the green backstamp. This set being a light creamy color with a superbly detailed Alvin thick sterling silver overlay of Art. Nouveau spiral floral design, decorated on both front and backs of all pieces and complemented with fancy handles, spout and lids. The Ceramic Art Company of Trenton, New Jersey, was founded in 1889 by J. Coxon and Walter Scott Lenox and was an early producer of American Belleek porcelain. The company started out as more of an Art Studio than a factory. In the beginning, instead of a full line of ceramics, the company produced one-of-kind artistic ceramic pieces. Walter Scott Lenox took full ownership of the company in 1894 and renamed it Lenox, Inc. The company made pieces with sterling silver overlay from 1900 to 1910 and art deco figurines and pieces into the 1920s. Shops specializing in high quality ceramic pottery carried Lenox products. These products were displayed in the Smithsonian Institution in 1897. Pot 9 1/2″ widest-6 1/4″ tall. Sugar bowl 5 widest. Sterling silver overlay is thick, is in very good condition as you can see, except for a small area on the bottom of the sugar bowl. Missing silver, the set is. Very good as mentioned sterling overlay is good and shines nicely as you can see in the first and last photos which I shined a bit, porcelain inner rim does have a rim chip, I don’t know if collectors would actually use a rare set like this other than display purpose, in any case if so it does not impact the use integrity, nor the display integrity, as you can see the pierced tea liner sits inside nicely without any issues and the lid fits on also as would be expected.
