DOES NOT COME WITH PITCHER. 7-piece silverplated drink set in the text book Jugendstil /Art Nouveau style with incredibly intricate details of flowing flowers and irises made by WMF in Germany. WMF is the abbreviation for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, which in English means Wurtemberg Metalware Factory. The marks on this set date it from the period of 1886 to 1903. So rare to find a set like this in this condition. These pieces have the intentional artificial darkening of the silver plate, as intended with the as mark. The cups are silverplated over Brittania Metal and the tray is silver plated over brass. Silver plating is worn in some areas, on the tray it shows a beautiful brass color underneath. These are all marked very informatively. The tray has a 4-letter PRE-ostrich mark which helps date the pieces back to the 1886 -1903 date range. The tray is marked WMFM on the underside. The M stands for messing which is german for brass. M and B indicate the base metals used for the silvering. Other markings are as and I/O. The two letter inscription as artificial darkening of silver surface. The fraction “I/O” means the normal thickness of silver deposited onto the surface of the base metal. Please note this set is in estate condition. The tray does not have any ripples or crimps, the cordial glasses all stand sturdily. These pieces have a fantastic patina with the silverplate worn in all the right places to almost accent the art nouveau design. Remember they were intentionally darkened to almost black, and the way the silverplate has worn off the tray to reveal the beautiful brass color underneath is just lovely. I have not polished this piece because I didn’t want to risk damaging any of the patina. So you will see in photos some darker areas, some more silver, and some on the tray more brass colored. There is surface scratching on the pieces – inside the cups and on their bases, and scratches made more evident in the mirrored areas of the tray. Along with quite a few scuffs and scratches, a few deeper scuffs and scratches to the underside of the tray where it would slide across the table.
