JAPANESE STERLING TEA SET c1895 SAMURAI SHOKAI – HAND CRAFTED This is a very fine and rare, hand crafted Japanese sterling silver tea set. The set consists of two iris branch handle tea cups & two matching iris on hand hammered surface saucers and both original, hand painted iris porcelain liners. These are the original liners to the set, not later added replacements. From Samurai Shokai, Yokohama. The shop founded by Nomura Yozo in 1894, after he “apprenticed” in the asian arts store of A. Valentine in New York City. The firm became renowned world wife for the finest hand crafted silver, and decorative arts. Purveyors to the Imperial Family. Examples in the Honolulu Academy of Art collection, Sackler/Freer Museum, Wash. And the Clarke Art Collection to name a few. This is the last set we are offering from the original three generation collection. Each of the three pieces hallmarked as shown. This rare Japanese sterling iris tea cup is 2 3/4 inches handle to rim. And the matching iris saucer 4 1/2 inches, silver alone. Weighs 5 1/2 standard ounces. In very fine condition. The set retains both of the original, hand painted porcelain liners. Also hallmarked for Samurai Shokai, these almost never survive the 100 or more years.
