SET OF SIX ART NOUVEAU STERLING SILVER BUTTONS, T. D, LONDON, c. 1890-1900
This is a stylish set of Six Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Buttons from the late Victorian period. The buttons are circular with a design featuring a young woman’s head in profile with a laurel wreath surround. The buttons were made in London, most probably by Thomas James Dicks, and date to the end of the 19th century. They don’t have regular English hallmarks and may have been made for either personal use or for export. The Dicks family business was founded by Thomas Dicks, a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1792. He was joined in partnership by his son James Dicks in 1821 and they carried on together until Thomas’ death in 1832. The business was continued by further generations of the Dicks family up to Thomas James Dicks who was active from around 1880 until his retirement around 1900. Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. Each button is 2.2cm in diameter and the set of six together weighs in at a respectable 32.8g of solid Sterling Silver. The buttons are all stamped STERLING on the back, along with the T. D makers’ mark usually used by Thomas James Dicks and a rather curious kite mark that looks at first like a registered design mark but has all the wrong letters in it.
