Vintage c1890 Alphonse Debain Art Nouveau French 6 Piece Solid Silver Christening Breakfast Set Engraved’Celina’ A stunning French Art Nouveau 6 piece breakfast christening set made by Alphonse Debain and retailed by Emile Anthony & Wolfers Freres of Antwerp, Belgium. It comprises of a napkin ring, egg cup, large spoon & fork, an egg spoon and a marrow spoon with what looks like a wooden or horn bowl. The larger fork, spoon and teaspoon have rat tail pattern to rear Each piece has beautiful art nouveau engravings of flowers and is engraved with the name’Celina’ The set is in excellent condition with minimal age related wear that does not detract from its overall presentation or use, there is minor tarnishing and small marks in places, the wooden spoon has some tiny chips to edge The original box purple has some scuffs to exterior and has lovely detailed clasps, the chamois interior has some minor marks in places The fork measures approx 18cm and weighs 36.36 grammes The spoon measures approx 17.5cm and weighs 40.37 grammes The egg spoon measures approx 12cm and weighs 19.28 grammes The marrow spoon measures approx 17.3cm and weighs 22.86 grammes The napkin ring measures 5.1cm diameter by 3.6cm high and weighs 44.05 grammes The egg cup measures 5.3cm high and weighs 38.58 grammes Please view photos carefully as they form part of the description Please view my other listings More on the maker: François-Alphonse Debain operating from 140 rue du Temple, registered his mark “a rowboat with two little men” on 15 January 1847 and renewed it on 19 July 1851. The mark was struck off on 27 May 1864. His son Alphonse-Edouard Debain succeeded him using the same symbol in his partnership with Louis-Frédéric Flamant, working as Debain & Flamant. Alphonse-Edouard Debain’s son, Alphonse Debain, became the successor to silversmith Philippe Berthier in 1883 and used Berthier’s symbol “a woodcock” to adapt his own mark to “AD and a woodcock” Alphonse Debain relocated his activities to 79 rue du Temple and Louis-Frédéric Flamant continued the business at 140 rue du Temple More on the retailer Antwerp firm of silversmiths. He was married twice: to Julia Meeuw (1889) and to Madeleine de Suyck. In 1897 he entered into association with Wolfers Frères from Brussels and shortly afterwards, in 1899, he moved from the Oudaan to the Meir. His son Paul (° 1906) succeeded him.
