Durgin’s turn of the 20th century “Iris” follows after the manner of that company’s flagship “New Art” line. This set of eight place aka regular forks all measure 7 long, and as is the case with the line, are heavy, with the group weighing 13.1 T. Combined, or well over 1.5 T. Seven of them are engraved “MR” in a delicate flowing script on the fronts, while one of them has a similar “MRH” (perhaps added after marriage) inscribed on the obverse and the word “Washington” on the reverse. They are in excellent estate condition showing minimal evidence of use. Pattern detail remains well-defined and the finishes have a rich patina. The top center backsides all have a slightly flattened spot where the handles rest, and some of the tines show the slightest bit of tip wear and/or shallow knife cuts on the reverses. The seven are marked with the Durgin “D” emblem and “Sterling, ” along with the one, which also includes a retailer’s name, “Shaw & Berry, ” Washington, D. Which cross references with the above inscription. Price is for the set. The item “Matched Set of Eight Durgin Iris Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Place Forks” is in sale since Sunday, March 15, 2020.
