Eye catching complete 13 piece ice cream service set in. 750 solid silver in a figural Morning Glory pattern in its original box. This was modeled after Gorham’s highly collectible Morning Glory line of 1865 and is very similar in design, but this set was made by C. Gutig of Leipzig, Germany who operated in the Art Nouveau era. Each piece is stamped. 750 on the back of the spoon bowl for continental solid silver content. Although not as nice as Gorham, they are a good quality, with gold washed spoon bowls and similarly textured flowers and leaves with intricate detail. I think the differences between the makers are probably most evident in the serving spoon, since all the silver work on the serving piece is larger scale. The main pattern differences that I could detect are the wound “spring” like tendril underneath the flowers, and then the center of these flowers don’t have the little stamen. The back sides of the spoon bowls on the top part behind the leaves also look slightly different when comparing the two makers side by side. Still a very elegant set from the late 1800s. Combined weight is 296 grams of solid silver. Each of the 12 ice cream spoons weighs about 20 grams and the server weighs about 66 grams. The serving spoon is 9 1/4 inches long and the spoons are 5 5/8 inches. Marked 750 for silver content on the back of each spoon bowl. Original box is labeled inside the lid CF Gutig Juweleir Leipzig. In estate condition considering age but still in very nice shape overall. The gold wash in the spoon bowls is still vibrant and I don’t see any pin dings or dents. Some surface wear and utensil scratches from use and polish. A few nicks here and there. Two of the flower handles are missing the little spring tendril below the flower. There are some deeper linear scratches in the bowl of the serving spoon. A few nicks to the stems of the spoons but they have held their shape well. The box has a few stains and discoloration to the silk, a few tears to the fabric, and then some of the wooden holders have come loose and moved out of place under the silk. But as with all my estate items – Please see photos closely as this set is not a mint condition set. More pictures available upon request so please send a note before purchasing if there is anything specific or any detail you’d like to see. Thanks for stopping by my store!
