Sterling silver set of 4 compote dishes in Art Nouveau style with everted rims showing exquisite flowers and scrolls around the rim and at the base as well as coat of arms. Each measures 8 2/3” in diameter by 4 1/2” in height and bears hallmarks as shown. Total weight is 68.3 troy ounces. Was a major jewellery retailer and one-time silversmith in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The firm experienced rapid growth from the start, and repeated enlargements and removals were made necessary from time to time to gain the greater facilities demanded. In 1843, James Caldwell entered in partnership with Bennett, acting under the name Bennett & Caldwell. Caldwell acquired a national reputation through its silver services presented to battleships and cruisers of the US Navy.
