Macmillan’s Illustrated Standard Novels, deluxe issue, in the’cloth elegant’ bindings designed by A. Turbayne and with yellow endpapers bearing a peacock design, and consequently known as the’Peacock series’, is the only Art Nouveau designed set of Jane Austen. Turbayne from Boston USA was one of the leading book designers at the turn of the century and responsible for some of the most notable trade bindings of the period, for Macmillan, Black, George Allen, and many others. In the book’ Art and Crafts Book Covers’ by Malcolm Haslam pub. Richard Dennis, 2012, there are no less than seven illustrations of Turbayne’s work. All edges gilt, with tissue-guarded frontispiece, approx. 40 full page illustrations in each volume, corners very gently bumped with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors, with no age stains or foxing. Some uniform light sunning to the spines and frontis pages, light bumping to the head and tail of the spines, a small scrape on the rear of one of the vols, few volumes with light dustiness to the end papers. With no inscriptions or previous owner’s information. A scarce set and has never been found in such a splendid condition, Gilson E79.
